Not sure how much sleep does a 2 year old need? The need for sleep varies from person to person, especially when it comes to the kids. There is no sight cuter and more serene than a child sleeping. Some kids sleep most of the time and seem lazy or drowsy, while some are active and always energetic with little hours of sleep. Apart from the habit or genetic sleeping, some of the main factors that affect it in which the age of the toddlers withstands all the other factors. 

From being an infant to a toddler, you may see the difference in the sleeping schedules of your kid. When the kids are at the age of 2 years, they are in some kind of transition stage or period which is more than a newborn and less than a school going baby. 

How much sleep does a 2 year old need? The truth!

It is a common question that we have countered with every second mother of their first child. Experiencing it for the first time, they know little about the behavioral changes or napping timings. In general, the toddlers sleep lesser than their younger age. They spend more of their time playing and learning about the exploration of the world. Their late sleeping occurs in late bedtimes, non-sleepiness, or early awakening with shorter periods of naps. 

On average, the toddlers sleep for around 12 to 14 hours a day. This figure may vary with your toddler. Most of this time includes the nighttime sleeping along with an hour or two from the daytime napping. You should know that these are just the figures that we have found and they base on the average of our surveys. Every kid is unique in his or her way and may have their own sleeping mood and timings. 

As you continue growing, the nap times grow even shorter. By the time your toddler will start going to preschool, he or she will shorten this time till 10-12 hours a day, and they cut it even shorter by kindergarten. Being adults, we can only dream about sleeping this much. 

There is a hierarchy of the kid’s age and their sleep time till they come to the toddler’s age. 

  • Till the kid come to the age of 1 month, their drowsing can be of 16 hours. 
  • When they get past that and get from 1 month to 1-year-old age, they sleep for around 15 hours a day.
  • Whereas, entering the age of toddling from 1 to 3 years old, they sleep 12 or 13 hours a day.

It is the disruptions in the drowsing that can affect your schedules for a while after then. Sleep regression is not something you should be afraid of. The cause behind it could be anything, but it does not stay forever. Similar to our case, when we do not get the amount of sleep we want, our routine disturbs, and we take weeks to come back to track. The same case is with the kids. It gets back to normal if you start paying attention to their sleep timings.
